the only way i can type anything is to hold down a fn key

Hi, Tony - it appears that your NumLock key is on - perhaps even as a default setting. This would make "symbols and numbers" come out as "sy0b63s and n40bers". 'NumLock' is usually a secondary function on the 'Scroll' key; just tap it while holding down the 'Fn' key to turn it off.

I seem to recall, from many years ago, that this can be set on or off by default when you boot - in the BIOS, maybe? - but I can't come up with any details.
